FAQ

What is CIM EA?
CIM EA is a UML-based extension to Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect that supports standard uses of the IEC Common Information Model (CIM). Once you download and install CIM EA, you can create and manage CIM Profiles as traditional UML models, organize CIM Profiles with Profile Groups, and generate implementation artifacts, all within Enterprise Architect.

What are the system requirements to run CIM EA?
CIM EA currently runs on Windows 7 and Windows XP operating systems only. Because CIM EA is an add-in to Enterprise Architect, you also need to have Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems installed on your computer. To learn more about Enterprise Architect, visit the product page on the Sparx Systems website.

Who should use CIM EA?
CIM EA is designed for anyone in the IEC CIM user community who is interested in creating and modifying CIM Profiles, organizing Profiles with Profile Groups, or generating implementation artifacts from a CIM Profile.

How much does CIM EA cost?
CIM EA is free to download and use.

How do I use CIM EA?
If you are new to CIM EA or aren't sure how a particular feature works, check out our User Manual. View our tutorials for step-by-step guides and videos.

I just installed a new version of the add-in and it's not showing up in EA. Why can't I see it?
Any previous versions of the add-in must be uninstalled before you can install and use a new version. If you have already installed a new version over an older version, run a Repair from the .exe file to fix the issue.

What output options are available in CIM EA?
CIM EA generates CIM RDF and XSD artifacts. To learn more, see the Generate Artifacts page in the User Manual.

What is the status of CIM EA?
CIM EA is in its first public release, but we are still accepting suggestions and issue reports from users. As we incorporate your suggestions, we will release new versions and make them available on this site.

Where can I report a problem with CIM EA?
Please submit any problems you encounter in our Issue Tracker. Once you've submitted an issue, our developers will keep you posted on its status.

What technology was used to create CIM EA?

CIM EA was written using .NET (C#) in Microsoft Visual Studio.  It leverages the add-in architecture and .NET-based API available within Enterprise Architect to automate UML modeling and to generate artifacts from the model.

Who developed CIM EA?
CIM EA development was sponsored by Xtensible Solutions in an effort to provide the CIM user community with an easy-to-use EA add-in and to ultimately facilitate adoption of the CIM across the utility industry.
